Red Ramshorn Snail

Common Name: Red Ramshorn Snail
Scientific Name: Planorbidae (Genus)

Overview:
Ramshorn Snails are a highly attractive and beneficial addition to any aquarium. Known for their unique and vibrant red or pink bodies, they serve as natural algae cleaners, eating off glass, plants, and decorations, which helps maintain the health of your tank. These snails are peaceful, non-invasive creatures that will not harm live plants and are safe to be kept with a variety of fish, shrimp, and other tank inhabitants. Their rapid reproduction makes them an excellent choice for live food starter colonies for animals that eat snails, such as puffers.

Appearance:
The Red Ramshorn Snail is known for its bright pink to maroon-colored shells, with most snails falling on the pink side of the spectrum. Their bodies are consistently bright red or pink. They start off as pea-sized juveniles but can grow up to 1-2 inches in diameter. Their spiral-shaped shells are a striking feature, adding an extra pop of color and interest to your aquarium.

Hard/Soft Snail:
These are considered easy-to-care-for snails that do well in various water conditions.

Ideal Water Temperature:
They thrive in temperatures between 16°C and 27°C (60°F to 80°F), making them suitable for a variety of tropical and subtropical tanks.

Lighting Conditions:
No specific lighting requirements, but adequate light will encourage algae growth for them to feed on.

pH Level Range:
The ideal pH for these snails is between 7.0 and 8.0.

Tank Requirements & Care:

  • Water Type: Soft to hard water works well for Red Ramshorn Snails.
  • Diet: They feed on algae, waste, and fish food or invertebrate pellets. They are very effective algae-eaters, particularly hair algae.
  • Reproduction: These snails reproduce quickly, making them an excellent live food starter colony. They breed rapidly under most water conditions, so it’s essential to monitor their population to avoid overpopulation. If this happens, Assassin Snails can help control the numbers.

Tank Mates:

  • Other snail species (e.g., Nerite Snails, Mystery Snails, Sulawesi Snails).
  • Dwarf shrimp like Blue Velvet shrimp, Sakura Fire Red Cherry Shrimp, and Neon Yellow Shrimp.
  • Small to medium-sized, non-aggressive fish.

Do You Know:

  • Red Ramshorn Snails are highly sensitive to copper, so avoid using tap water with copper in it.
  • These snails are fun to watch and are often seen with dwarf shrimp riding around on them, making them a delight for aquarists who enjoy observing quirky interactions in their tanks.

This unique snail species will not only help keep your aquarium clean but also add some color and charm to your setup.
