Java Fern Philippine (Microsorum Pteropus): The Hardy Aquatic Beauty

Originating from the island of Java, Indonesia, Java Fern Philippine is a popular and low-maintenance aquarium plant. It thrives in Southeast Asiaā€™s streams and waterfalls, growing on rocks, tree roots, and the ground. This epiphytic plant is perfect for attaching to aquascaping hardscapes like driftwood and stones.

Key Features:

  • Appearance: Java Fern Philippine has thick, lance-shaped, lush green leaves, reaching up to 3 to 5 inches in height. Its attractive green color and ability to withstand aggressive fish make it an ideal plant for aquariums, providing hiding spots and aesthetic appeal.
  • Hardiness: A hardy plant thatā€™s perfect for beginners due to its tolerance for varying conditions.

Care Tips:

  • Temperature: Prefers a temperature range of 21Ā°C to 24Ā°C but can tolerate temperatures as low as 15Ā°C and as high as 28Ā°C.
  • Lighting: Needs low light conditions. Avoid bright light or excessive sun exposure, which can harm the plant.
  • pH Range: Thrives in a pH range of 6 to 7.5, with alkalinity of 3-8 dKH.

Propagation: Java Fern Philippine can be propagated by cutting or pulling apart the rhizomes, or even through its leaves. Be sure not to bury the rhizome, as it can cause the plant to die.

Additional Tips: Sudden changes in water parameters should be avoided, as they can lead to the plant melting or rotting. While CO2 is not required, it can promote better growth.
